Hieracium sect. Tridentata (Fr.) Arv.-Touv., a hawkweed
Account Summary
Native, very rare.
21 July 1872; Brenan, Rev S.A.; Marble Arch or Claddagh River Glen.
There are just two records listed in the Fermanagh Flora Database under this section name. S.A. Brenan's vouchers from this site were originally determined by S.A. Stewart as H. tridentatum Fr. (More 1873). The name was modified to H. rigidum Hartm. var. tridentatum in Praeger's Irish Topographical Botany in 1901. Vouchers of Brenan's find in BEL were re-determined by C.E.A. Andrews in 1969 as H. stewartii, H. ampliatum and H. uiginskyense (but see H. calcaricola account below).
Second on the Database listing is Praeger's (1936) record for H. tridentatum Fr. that is simply given as the VC number, "33", ie Fermanagh without any locality in what he refers to as a "conspectus" following rearrangement and re-naming changes that had taken place after the publication of his Irish Topographical Botany in 1901. It is possible that Praeger is merely listing Brenan's record under the revised name that he used in the earlier publication.
Subsequently, however, British and Irish plants named H. tridentatum Fr. with narrow leaves have been mainly transferred to H. calcaricola (F. Hanb.) Roffey (Sell & Murrell 2006, p. 251).
It is not known where Praeger's plant, if it exists, should really lie, but it should not be too far off the mark if it is allowed to remain in this section. A voucher may turn up in DBN, which would allow the questions involved to be reassessed.
